nefolk In 1996 or so, I was reading Robert Holdstock's classic 'Mythago Wood' for the first time and heavily perusing a back-to-back C-120 with Allerseelen's 'Cruor' and this, which complemented the atmosphere of the book so perfectly that I still can and would not get rid of that immediate mental link. Whenever the first notes of 'Riverine' chime in, I'm instantly spirited away to Ryhope, if only for a brief spell. Since then, 'Spindrift' has been my favorite atmospheric/dark ambient album of all time Favorite track: riverine.

'spindrift' is an album of its own kind, an unlikely combination of atmospheric industrial on a lighter note with carefully used organic sounds and acoustic instruments. some tracks have a strong cinematic appeal, like 'eternity ring' or the almost 18-minute-long 'riverine', while others are actual songs - 'herb of grace' is a beautiful piece of chamber music with ethereal female vocals, 'stairhead' is nothing less than full-blown psychedelia, 'sundance' sounds like an intoxicated private celebration and 'echium' resonates with the hangover from collective madness - which returns in 'shrivatsa', ten minutes of pure spiritual bliss, complete with tender percussion sounds and flute melodies. an album like a short scandinavian summer, to be savoured on the spot.

❤️My original plan was to go through and buy individual tracks like I do with most compilation albums, but honestly there are just so many good ones that I wound up buying the whole thing. More than simple drones (though there are plenty of those, too), this album collects many of the best and most innovative dark ambient artists in one place, including many who are new to me.
